Grand Experiments: West Marches

The party:

  • Bernard the cleric
  • Thorgus the henchman
  • Gorn the dwarf

The party set off south along the coastline loaded down with equipment after hearing a rumor of a prospecting group disappearing in a coal mine. Arriving in the early afternoon, the party descended in the functioning lift only to be greeted by an alarm being raised. Throwing out caution, the party stood it’s ground and prepared for a fight. When no one approached, the party moved down a west passage and ambushed a group of burlap wearing vagrants. Thorgus did the heavy lifting in the fight, with Gorn missing every attack. After 3 rounds, one escaped enemy, and a discovery that the vagrants are mutants, the unwounded party moved south into another mine tunnel. Coming up on what appeared to be a sacrificial execution of three prisoners by four more mutants, the party was forced into quick combat and luckily won the initiative. Putting down two of the four in the first round and another one in following round, the party forced the last mutant to flee with a bound young woman. A short foot chase followed and ended with a dead mutant under Bernard’s mace. Freeing the prisoners, grabbing a nearby large chest, and escorting them back to the surface became the new plan. Working their way back through the tunnels, the party made it back to the lift only having two crossbow bolts shot at them while traveling up. The party successfully escaped the old mine without loss and with help from the (now freed) prisoners hauled the chest back to Raven Down where they plan to resupply and search out the hiding place of the mutants.
